Oxygen Reduction — How It Works

Conventional fire suppression acts after ignition — discharging gas or water to extinguish a fire already burning. Oxygen Reduction Systems (ORS) take a different approach: they permanently reduce the oxygen concentration in a protected space to a level where fire simply cannot start.

Isolcell systems continuously generate nitrogen and inject it into the protected room, displacing oxygen from the normal atmospheric level of 21% down to 15% or lower. Most common materials — paper, wood, plastics, electrical insulation — cannot ignite below 15–16% O₂. The room remains continuously protected without any agent discharge.

At 15% Oв‚‚, acclimatised personnel can work normally. Access protocols and oxygen monitoring ensure safe occupancy throughout. When a door opens, the system compensates automatically by increasing nitrogen injection.

Ideal Applications

ORS technology is the preferred solution wherever water or gas suppression would cause damage equal to or greater than the fire itself — or where continuous 24/7 protection is required without maintenance interruption.

  1. Data centres and server rooms — no water, no discharge, servers stay live
  2. Archives and libraries — irreplaceable documents protected permanently
  3. Museums and art storage — artefacts and artworks with no risk of suppression damage
  4. Cold stores and CA rooms — combined fire prevention and atmosphere control
  5. Vaults and secure storage — year-round passive protection
  6. Cable ducts and switch rooms — protection without interrupting electrical systems
